Details

Glowing bright white-green in your garden, these scalloped summer squash look like flying saucers (for tiny little aliens, anyway). Their unique shape results in a myriad of soft-edged forms when sliced up. Grown just like a zucchini, and picked when quite small, these tender-fleshed squash are a joy to grill, steam, or saute--or fry with a ray gun.
Number of Seeds 30
Spacing in Row 24 inches
Spacing Between Rows 36 inches
Planting Depth ¾ to 1 inch

Direct sow at 3- or 4-week intervals beginning after last frost (or sow indoors up to 3 weeks earlier--but no sooner). Provide fertile soil for quick and steady growth. Pick when squash are 3-4 inches in diameter. Harvest steadily, and plants will continue to produce for up to a month. Replace with fresh plants at this point, as old summer squash plants quickly lose vigor.
In addition to being an active artist and illustrator, Daupo is an avid gardener and vermicomposter. His ink and watercolor illustrations range from the whimsical to the dark, and can be full of surprises.
