Details

Kabocha squash has always been a delectable favorite, but most varieties on the market and in seed catalogs are hybrids -- we don't offer hybrid varieties since you can't save seed from them. In our search for the open-pollinated kabocha, we came across Blue Kuri. It started with a simple trial, and ended up as an obsession. The big, beautiful vines need a lot of room to grow, and only yield 1-3 ripe, blue squash per plant, but each one is a treasure. Limited availability.

Direct sow after frost, or start indoors 2-3 weeks earlier. Transplant in hills spaced 6' apart, 3 plants per hill, or in rows 36" apart. Plants can grow 6' or more, so give plenty of space to take over. Mulch early to help suppress weeds. Harvest when squash are buff-colored with no trace of green. Cure in a dry, warm place for a week or so, then store in a cool, dry, dark place. Note: Blue-colored squash are the preferred shade of food for the squash bug, so be sure to take preventative measures against them.
