Ground cherries are an unheralded delight of the garden. Very easy to grow and highly productive, they yield dozens and dozens of small, sweet treats per plant. This variety is especially delicious. The fully-ripened fruit have tones of pineapple and citrus, their golden color instantly appealing. Terrific for munching and for making chutneys.

I brought ground cherries with me to the Woodstock Farm Market and the Pickle Festival in NYC. Each time, folks were skeptical about trying them, but once they did, they kept coming back for more. I had to start keeping track of who had already had enough tastes and cut them off so that there would be enough left for everyone else. Even kids, who can be the most picky about new foods, loved them. Many people asked me why they are not more commonly known. Although they have great flavor and are easy to grow, they are not well suited to mechanical harvesting and grocery store shelf life. They are, however, perfect for the grazing gardener.
