Blue Flax was discovered by Meriwether Lewis on the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the late 1700's. Collecting plant specimens was an important part of the expedition and Thomas Jefferson, who was a botanist, helped train Meriwether Lewis in the science of collecting and documenting new species. Much of the collection is held by the in Philadelphia at the
Academy of Natural Sciences in cooperation with Cornell University.
This variety has short lived sky blue flowers that bloom in succession and may perennialize in warmer regions.
