Details

Kolkhoznitsa, translated most literally as Collective Farm Woman, refers to the days of agricultural production cooperatives in the Soviet Union. This extra sweet, early ripening melon is one of the best mementos from a time of communal farming past. This variety was first brought to this country from the island of Krim, Ukraine, by a Seed Savers Exchangemember: a present-day version of collective farming, of sorts. The little melons (7 to 10 inches) prefer warm weather over hot and do especially well in more northern climates.
Number of Seeds 30 seeds
Spacing in Row 36 - 48 inches
Spacing Between Rows 60 - 72 inches
Planting Depth 1/2 inch
Days to Germination 3 - 10 days
Days to Maturity 85 days
Sow indoors under protection 2-3 weeks before last frost, or direct sow after last frost and when soil has warmed significantly. Provide fertile soil and plenty of space. As fruits mature, elevate using flat, porous stones or ceramic shards to avoid rotting fruit. Melons are ripe when they slip from the vine with a gentle tug; color will deepen and fruit will become aromatic. Remember, you must have a healthy population of pollinators like bees to get a good fruit set. Harvest when skin turns orange-yellow. Stores well for several weeks after harvest.
