Details

A New York heirloom variety introduced Jerome B. Rice Seed Company of Cambridge, New York around 1910. J.B. Rice described this cuke as "the earliest and best white spine cucumber ever offered." Fruits are 7-8" long, 2" in diameter, and have a distinctive sun ray pattern on the end. Rice, who was a Civil War veteran, grew his seed company into the second largest and profitable seed company of its era. We have a small collection of Rice's trading cards featuring anthropomorphic vegetable illustrations. In addition to the wonderful whimsy of the cards, we love their literary backs. Especially the "Rice's Seeds are the Best because they are Northern Grown" claim. The late 1800-early 1900 were a time of great garden diversity and emphasis on regionally grown seeds. By offering this cucumber, our illustrated Art Packs, and many of our other varieties, we're hoping to bring back the culture and agriculture of regionally adapted seeds.

The New York Historical Society has a collection of these cards as well. You can see some of them in their blog post Vegetables Are People Too.

Direct sow after frost, or start under protection up to three weeks before (but no earlier--cukes grow very quickly). Provide fertile soil. Harvest regularly; once cukes become too mature to eat, the plants tend to cease producing new cukes. Sow in succession at three-week intervals for healthy plants and abundant cukes all season long.
