Schoon's will give you Septembers that will linger on in your dreams. Day upon day, you'll pluck fresh sweet fruits off the vine. Your diet will become melon-centric. You'll be adding melon slices to fruit salads, smoothies, and breakfasts; you'll pack baggies of melon slices for late-summer hikes; you'll fill your fridge with the big globes. The sky will turn peachy blue, the world a giant netted orb.

Of course, all this hinges on planting the seeds in a timely fashion and protecting the maturing fruits from critters, who will create horrific melon carnage if given the opportunity. That said, melons are easier to grow than reputed, especially during warm and dry summers, and most varieties can be direct sown in the Northeast. Schoon's is a great one: the fruit are big (sometimes really big), netted, packed with cantaloupey flavor, with a thick rind.
Number of Seeds 25 seeds
Spacing in Row 36 to 48 inches
Spacing Between Rows 60 to 72 inches
Planting Depth 1/2 inch
Days to Germination 3 to 10 days
Days to Maturity 90 days
Sow indoors under protection 2-3 weeks before last frost, or direct sow after last frost and when soil has warmed significantly. Provide fertile soil and plenty of space. As fruits mature, elevate using flat, porous stones or ceramic shards to avoid rotting fruit. Melons are ripe when they slip from the vine with a gentle tug; color will deepen and fruit will become aromatic.
