You can learn a lot about this vegetable from the name--Watermelon radish mimics the large, sweet fruit in appearance, with white skin masking a bright, red interior. The radish is also a little less biting than expected. Once you're done enjoying your garden-grown watermelon is the time to plant this radish--they are best when sowed in the late-summer for a winter harvest. Best eaten however you prefer: raw, pickled, sliced over salads, the watermelon radish has flavor to impress.

Direct sow Watermelon Radish in late summer in rows spaced 10" apart. Thin small radish seedlings to 4-6" apart for large roots. Keep watered, especially during hot weeks. Harvest 3-6" radishes after the first frost for a sweet crop. Cut the tops off and store in the refrigerator or in a root cellar for months. (Tops are are exceptionally good; enjoy in a saute or braising mix.)
