When it comes to peppers, most gardeners crave the sweet blocky bell. Its thick, juicy flesh and sweet flavor are universally appealing, but its ripening season, sadly, is quite long. Struggle with this problem in your garden? Invite the King to visit. Introduced in 1934 by Harris Seeds of Rochester, NY, King of the North is a fast-maturing pepper that finds short seasons and cool temperatures to be no match. In fact, while all peppers like some heat, we've found in our trials that the King does better in a moderately warm summer than in a scorcher.
Number of Seeds 25 seeds
Spacing in Row 18 inches
Spacing Between Rows 36 inches
Planting Depth ½ inch
Days to Germination 10 to 14 days
Days to Maturity 88 (from transplant)
Start indoors 8-10 weeks before last frost in very warm spot (80 degrees is ideal). Keep seedlings in a well-ventilated place at 70+ degrees and do not over water. Transplant outdoors into good soil after threat of frost has passed. Grows to 3' high and usually requires staking to keep plants off the ground. Large, blocky fruits ripen from green to brilliant red.
Jesica Clark loves veggies and all things related, including drawing them. Farmer in the summer and artist in the winter, she creates linocut and letterpress prints on her tabletop press.
