Details

Elegantly shaped summer squash that makes a myriad of soft-edged shapes when sliced up. Skin is off-white and flesh is pale green. Will go with almost any Martha Stewart dining room set. Introduced in 1914, U.P. Hedrick wrote about this variety in Cucurbits of New York, in 1937. He calls it Farr's Benning White Bush and goes on to descibe it as "one of the most beautiful strains of the whole group of Patty Pans." Grown just like crook neck or zucchini, this compact bush produces well and first fruits are ready in about 50 days. Pick when small before they can be mistaken for flying saucers from Mars.
Number of Seeds 50 seeds
Spacing in Row 12 to 24 inches
Spacing Between Rows 5 to 6 feet
Planting Depth ½ to 1 inch
Days to Germination 5 to 10 days
Days to Maturity 52 days
Direct sow at 3 or 4-week intervals beginning after last frost (or sow indoors up to 3 weeks earlier--but no sooner). Provide fertile soil for quick and steady growth. Pick when squash are 3-4 inches in diameter. Harvest steadily, and plants will continue to produce for up to a month. Replace with fresh plants at this point, as old summer squash plants quickly lose vigor.
