Details

New Yorker is a reliable early-crop tomato that is terrific for salads, for canning, for sauces, and for slicing. It is not an unbelievably-delicious-melt-in-your-mouth heirloom. It is a very reliable bearer of tons of small, attractive, orangey-red fruit that come earlier than nearly any other variety. Our New Yorkers arrived in force well before the blight of 2009 arrived, delivering a bunch of big harvests before being done in (it is not, alas, resistant to late blight--but it does hold its own longer than most).

Days to Maturity 63 from transplant
Determinate. Sow indoors 3-8 weeks before last frost, then transplant after frost into good garden soil. Pruning not necessary; harvest is condensed for about 3 or 4 weeks at the very beginning of tomato season. When few tomatoes remain, pull up plants and shelf-ripen the fruit; use the garden space for fall greens.
