Money may not grow on trees, but it can grow from seeds!

We love supporting organizations that are doing important work for their communities. In the name of seeds, and the cooperative effort it takes to have healthy local food from seed to seed and farm to plate, we are offering Green$eeds.

Green$eeds is our way of growing money for community organizations. We’ve always been interested in finding ways to support all the parts of a sustainable and resilient local economy. We commission artwork from local artists for our seed packs, contract with local farms to grow seed for our catalog, and teach workshops all over the Northeast. Green$eeds expands our commitment to building community and makes your seed money count. When you choose seeds from our catalog, you know that the seeds you are going to grow in your garden not only support a local farm instead of a multinational corporation, but that you are supporting sustainable growth within your own community.

We’re offering this fundraising program for the months of February-May for those interested in working with the Hudson Valley Seed Library to raise funds for their community organization. To be eligible groups must be community based organizations in the Hudson Valley, Capital District, or Metro New York such as a school, library, garden club, or community garden. Groups should be growing green in some way and show a commitment to developing sustainable practices within their communities.

Our goal with Green$eeds is to keep the initial investment to a minimum and give organizations a long period of time to sell seeds and the chance to reach more people. The participating group publicizes the fundraiser and their patrons are able to go directly to our website to buy their seeds. For each purchase, we donate 25% of each sale back to the organization. Groups can spread the word using the by email, mail, social networking, posters, and other advertising.

For groups who would like more materials to work with, organizations can  purchase a group Seed Library membership for $40. This includes 10 Garden/Library Packs, 16 Art Packs, and a reproducible order form. Your group can still use the online program but can also take orders directly using the form. For each pre-order using the form, we donate 40% of each sale back to the organization.

Registration starts now. There are limited supplies for these programs. We will try to accommodate everyone, but depending on the response we will accept groups on a first come first serve basis.

We hope that Green$eeds will help many of the great groups and organizations in the Hudson Valley that are working to strengthen community and provide important services. Of course, even if you are not part of an organization, you can buy seeds from our catalog or become a member of the Seed Library and know that you are helping to create truly sustainable foodshed in the Hudson Valley.

It takes a (seedy) village!

For more information or to sign up email us. Please put Green$eeds and the name of your organization as the subject line in your email. Thanks!

Seed Giveaway Project

Friday, May 6th, 2011

So far this year our Green$eeds fundraising program has raised over $1000 for garden groups and green not-for-profits in New York. We’re excited to be further growing our support for green groups by partnering with the Poughkeepsie Farm Project. PFP has been growing and saving seeds and distributing them through their programs for years. By working together, we will be able to provide free seeds for even more folks- helping schools and summer programs teach gardening to children, and helping those in need feed themselves, their families, and communities. Please help us get the word out by sharing the following press release about the program. Thank you!

POUGHKEEPSIE FARM PROJECT AND HUDSON VALLEY SEED LIBRARY PRESENT THE

2011 SEED GIVEAWAY PROJECT

Seeds Free of Charge to Educational/Non-Profit Groups

Poughkeepsie, NY – May 4, 2011 – The Hudson Valley Seed Library joins the Poughkeepsie Farm Project this year in making seeds available completely free of charge to school gardens and nonprofits with gardening programming.  The PFP’s Community Seed Project, which grows 10-15 varieties of seeds each year while teaching seed saving skills, began making seeds available for free to schools and nonprofits in 2010.  This year, the PFP joins forces with the Hudson Valley Seed Library, an Accord-based seed company which offers over 60 varieties of locally grown seed (including several grown by the PFP) and around 100 varieties sourced from responsible seed houses.  This collaboration increases the amount and variety of seeds available for donation.  In 2010, 500 packets (16 varieties of seeds) were distributed to 30 schools and nonprofits.  In 2011, 1000 packets (60 varieties) are available for distribution.

The Seed Giveaway Catalog and online application are available to view here.  Individuals may purchase seeds by ordering them at seedlibrary.org.  Seeds may be purchased directly at the PFP’s Open Farm Day and Plant Sale on May 14 or at the Seed Library’s Plant Sale and Farm Tour also on May 14th.

060-1Most of Hudson Valley Seed Library’s varieties are rooted in the history and soils of New York or are chosen because they do well here. Every year they plan on growing additional varieties on the Seed Library farm and contracting with organic and certified naturally grown farmers in the Hudson Valley and upstate New York to grow even more varieties. Their membership program provides a way for backyard gardeners to make a vital contribution to this effort.

According to the PFP, seed saving is an important first link in the food chain, as it: helps preserve the lost art of seed preservation; conserves biodiversity and genetic resources in an era of vulnerable agricultural monocultures and global climate change; helps us gain public control and self-sufficiency of the seed supply and the food we have available to us to eat; and allows us to work toward regional sustainability and increase regional food security.  The practice also creates seeds that are adapted to organic growing practices in the northeast and helps to preserve cultural heritage.

PFP Farm Manager Wendy Burkhart-Spiegel invites anyone interested in volunteering to take part in the PFP’s Community Seed Project to stop by Wednesdays between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. from April through October at the PFP site on the Vassar College Farm.

About the Poughkeepsie Farm Project

The Poughkeepsie Farm Project (PFP) is a non-profit organization that works toward a just and sustainable food system in the Mid-Hudson Valley by operating a member-supported farm, providing education about food and farming, and improving access to healthy locally-grown food. The PFP’s Community Seed Project grows and save seeds for local distribution, teaches seed saving skills to hundreds of youth and adults each year, and distribute free seeds to nonprofits with gardening programming.  The PFP is located in the City of Poughkeepsie at the intersection of Hooker and Raymond Avenues on Vassar College Farm.

Seed Drive

Final Count: 654 Seed packs set aside for donations! Thank you for helping to spread the word.

Now that our first annual seed drive is over we need to figure out where to send all the free seeds. But how do we decide if a garden is deserving of seeds? We ask you!

Nominations

Do you know of a school garden, community garden, or garden organization that could use a seed donation from the Seed Library?

We’d love to hear about them. Whether you are involved, or just think they’re great, you can nominate them by leaving a comment with the name of the school or organization on this blog post and why they deserve a seed donation. Groups and gardens must be nominated by January 20th. In January we’ll let you vote for your favorite nominee.

Vote!

You can vote for a garden to get more seeds.

The more votes, the more packs we’ll donate. To vote, make sure you are signed up for our monthly email. We’ll send out a voting form with all the nominated gardens in January.

Bonus!

The top 10 gardens will also be enrolled in our Green$eeds program.

Green$eeds is our way of helping to raise funds for community, school, and educational gardens. Each of the top 10 nominated gardens will be given a code. When you buy seeds online you can enter the code at checkout and we’ll automatically donate 10% of that sale to the garden. Last year Green$eeds raised over $2500 for gardens all over New York State.

Thanks for your help spreading the word about our seeds and helping us support gardening in your community.

Eligibility

To receive seed donations and be included in the voting, groups must be not-for-profit and engaged in gardening or working towards having a garden. Eligible garden must also be community based including schools, city/town gardens, and educational gardens open to the public.
